    Private transfer from the airport to a hotel near Gran Vía, and then nothing. The afternoon is deliberately empty, because you have just crossed an ocean. Welcome tapas dinner a few streets from the hotel, early enough to sleep.

    The Prado

    Morning with an art historian at the Prado, leisurely lunch in the Barrio de las Letras, free afternoon in the Retiro. For anyone with legs left, an unhurried walk through Madrid de los Austrias before dinner.

    La Mancha · Córdoba

    South across La Mancha, broken by the windmills at Consuegra and a long lunch underneath them. Into Córdoba in the late afternoon, check in, then an unhurried wander through the Judería as the patios come on. Dinner around the corner.

    The Mezquita, then Sevilla

    The Mezquita at opening with a guide, when the forest of arches is still half empty and cool. Back on the coach late morning, a stop at Carmona on its ridge, into Sevilla mid-afternoon. Dinner is the flamenco tablao, which asks nothing of you but a chair.

    The Alcázar, then Granada

    The Real Alcázar first thing with the art historian, before the heat and the queue, then lunch across the river at the Mercado de Triana. East through the olive groves in the afternoon with a tasting at a family estate on the way, into Granada by late afternoon. An hour in the Arab baths to get the road out of your legs, then up to the Mirador de San Nicolás for sunset and dinner in the Realejo.

    The Alhambra

    The Nasrid Palaces and the Alcazaba first thing with a specialist historian, out before the middle of the day. A long lunch and a proper sit down. Back up for the Generalife gardens in the late afternoon, when the heat has gone and the light is on the water. Farewell dinner with live guitar.
